I'm not quite sure I understand the negative feelings associated with the Peace Memorial that stands on Engineer Hill. Erected in 1987 the star like structure stands on the site where some of the most brutal fighting of the 19 day Attu conflict occurred in May of 1943. Many of the veterans who fought for this ground are disgusted by its presence here but I personally have no qualms with it. At least the Japanese cared enough to put a significant structure up; something that stands proudly in honor of the men who died not only on Attu but in the whole of the Pacific Conflict. They saw a need to pay tribute to the dead soldiers of both sides and the monument stands as a testament to this and to the hope for a peaceful future.
